Best quote ever:

"Twenty-two astronauts were born in Ohio. What is it about your state that makes people want to flee the Earth?"

--Stephen Colbert to Ohio 11th Dist. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones

[info]twentyafter7's recent post got me thinking about feeling old...

We were watching Back to the Future on cable the other night and had the "OMFG, this movie is 20 years old!!!" moment. I haven't felt quite the same since. I still remember seeing it in the theater for the third time, with Tracy Huberty and her mom. We were supposed to see 101 Dalmatians at Gold Circle, but it was sold out. So I suggested BttF, and we went to Belden Village Cinemas instead. I recall feeling nervous during the movie about the things that Mrs. H might find objectional to a couple of 8 year-olds.

I also received my first HS graduation announcement (AKA "Send me money!") which I decided officially marks me as an adult. Class of 2005 - was it really 10 years ago from today that my life revolved around end-of-the-year award ceremonies and writing thank you notes?? 4.1 GPA, what is that??

I guess time doesn't really matter in the end if you're happy now. I never dreamed I'd be where I am today, and I'm especially glad not to be where I did dream I'd be back then. :D (haha, diagram that sentence!)

"I AM Takapa!!" [May. 2nd, 2005|12:15 pm]
[Current Mood | geeky]

Somehow I have become totally addicted to old Dallas reruns on SoapNet. I don't know, maybe I'm subconsciously reliving the Friday nights of my childhood (if only Falcon Crest were on afterward!) but it has become my most beloved guilty pleasure. They just don't make tv dramas like that anymore. And damn, that JR sure is a sonuvabitch (no disrespect to you, Miss Ellie ma'am).

I'm finding it interesting how my perception of the characters has changed over the years. For example, I think when I was little, my favorite was Pam (probably because she was the prettiest, by my Barbie-doll standard). Now I find her whiny and irritating. Instead, I find myself siding with crazy-eyed Sue Ellen - let's see, becoming an alcoholic, being admitted to and escaping from a sanitarium, and crashing a stolen car, ALL while 7 months pregnant?? Now THAT's class! I also used to think Cliff was a bit of a douchebag (not that "douchebag" was part of my vocabulary when I was in elementary school) but now I find him quite likeable in his antics to destroy the Ewings.

Didn't appreciate it back at the time, but makes me proud to have visited the real Southfork! )

So today I picked up "Here Come the ABCs" by TMBG for Elliot. Haven't listened to all of it yet but I'm pretty stoked so far! I'm seriously hoping he'll take a liking to this over the next couple impressionable years before he gets exposed to something like those horrid Wiggles. Of course, those guys are easily millionaires by now - crazy Australian buggers!

Hmm, I bet Brad could easily wear a turtleneck and act like an idiot for a half hour... maybe it's time for a career change?

Afterthoughts [Nov. 3rd, 2004|01:36 pm]

[Current Music |Kerry speaking on tv]

Well, the concession has occurred. I'm glad Mr. K is being a big man and not dragging this out. We need time to heal from the mud-slinging and work on hunkering-down for another 4 years of more of the same. It's only 4 years - how much damage can one man and his cronies do, right? Right?

I find comfort knowing I cannot lose my job (I'm self-employed, and there will ALWAYS be lawsuits - no shortage of work for me), I don't need medications, and I'm too old and fat to be drafted. Hopefully our education system will hang in there and be on its way up by the time E is ready for school. Please don't make me homeschool!!

After my morning reading I discovered, to my surprise, that the election in Texas wasn't the Bush-tastic landslide I expected. Au contraire, Kerry WON Travis county (Austin) with 57%. Dallas County was 50/49%. There are some thinking Texans out there, God bless you. Thanks for Keepin' Austin Weird!

Let's get crackin'! [Jul. 22nd, 2004|01:35 pm]
[Current Mood | determined]

Today it's time to get back to South Beachin' it. I've been very lax the past month and at a plateau... Ohio didn't help at all, considering my most of my dining there consisted of hot dogs, pizza, pasta and cake. Not my fault - we were too busy running around planning parties/attending parties for mom to cook anything, so we had party food and ensuing leftovers. Can't complain about the cake though - mmm, Johnnies... Anyway, I had my final indulgence last night with some B&J Brownie Batter ice cream. Wow, I never thought I'd find a flavor better than Half Baked, but this was divine!

My little man had his first bites of cereal last night - *sniff* he's getting so big! I dunno if any went in his mouth, but it was a start. Apparently he is a neat freak like daddy, because every time he spit it out, he'd pull his bib up to his face to try and wipe it away! I think it only smeared it around more though. :)

"Dallas doesn't suck, you suck! Dallas rules!" [Jun. 25th, 2004|01:23 pm]
[Current Mood | dorky]
[Current Music |Mo purring on my desk - HEY, get off there!!]

There is a new Sedaris book out! Yahoo! It is called Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim.. Sounds promising, but reviews on Amazon are mixed. I will gobble it up anyways. First though, I must finish the other books already on my night stand:

-Kick Me: Adventures in Adolescence by Paul Feig: From the creator of one of the greatest tv shows ever, Freaks & Geeks. Some great autobiographical stories of embarrassment from grade school through high school, a few of which were portrayed in the series. Gawd, why did that show have to go off the air - what is wrong with people?? At least I have my dvds!

-Autobiography of a Fat Bride: True Tales of a Pretend Adulthood by Laurie Notaro: The 2nd book from the ringleader of the Idiot Girls' Action-Adventure Club. Yes, I read that first book because I couldn't resist the title. I liked it; it reminded me of how I would write if i were a writer. Perhaps I flatter myself.

I sense a theme here. Yes, I enjoy non-fiction-yet-probably-embellished humorous essays. Life is funny, and if you can't laugh at yourself then you will have a miserable existence. So go bury yourself in a hole.

And this fits in with South Beach how?? [Jun. 24th, 2004|10:22 am]

[Current Music |Shh.. E is sleeping!]

Peanut Butter Toast Crunch: Best. Cereal. EVER. I even emailed General Mills and told them so (Hey, it asks for comments on the side of the box, why not?).

Don't even bother putting milk on it, just grab a handful from the box. Mmm. It's even better that way.

And to think, if Jenn hadn't left town and bequeathed us her box, we would have never discovered it. Sad to think about. Thank you Jenn, for your immaculate taste in all things sugary.

[Current Music |Days of Our Lives on the tv]

So I finally got off my ass and started my LJ... we'll see how long that lasts. Got a dandy client for my mac to try out.

Starting to get pretty good at this mommyhood stuff. Elliot is sitting here grunting - must be pooping. Never thought I'd see the day when I'd get excited about someone pooping! At least he usually gives us ample warning before the guacamole explosion! Hopefully he will be so relieved he'll nap in his crib for 3 hours again like he did yesterday. Ahh, that was bliss. I did THINGS! Lots of them!

I think I will dive back into the ranks of the working soon. Is that my 'soon' or a Hans 'soon'? Who knows. But I'm feeling more confident. That, and desperate for money.

Ok, E is angry now. I've let him sit in his poopy diaper too long...
